    That’s Not a Sport!

    Posted by Cailin | April 18, 2008 .

Let me introduce myself, readers: my name is Cailin, I’m Eric’s wife and this is my first post. Since I happen to be a makeup writer who found out four months ago that the Steelers do not play baseball, I’m probably not the most authoritative source on sports of the writers here at 7 Game. However, I do have a complaint about nearly everything in life and my issue today is with the use of the term “sport” for almost every male-dominated hobby under the sun.

Most of the blame goes to ESPN’s desperate search for midday filler shows - there was a time that if you called golf a sport, people would laugh. Now that “Your Worldwide Leader in Sports” (keyword: SPORTS) shows everything from NASCAR to bowling to Magic: The Gathering tournaments (seriously), what separates a hobby from a sport is less well-defined.

Let me clear it up for you.

If there is literally no possibility that you will reach your target heart rate as a direct result of the activity, it is not a sport. (This means YOU, chess/poker/Magic/video game players. While your hobby may excite you, you won’t elevate your heart rate that much doing it unless you’re insanely overweight anyway - in which case, I’d suggest a MORE ACTIVE hobby.)

If the game requires no practice of physical coordination whatsoever, it is not a sport. I’m referring mostly to card games - flicking your cards just right when you fold doesn’t count, kids.

If it is possible to smoke a cigarette the entire time you are playing, it is not a sport.

    And finally:
If the activity has any national or world champions who are still in the fifth grade, IT IS NOT A SPORT!

To clarify: I love poker and video games, so please don’t take this to mean I don’t think they’re valid pursuits. I just don’t think Phil Ivey’s career should fall in the same category as Donovan McNabb’s. Also, I do consider bowling to be a sport, because it does require exertion and physical conditioning. Still on the fence about pool, though. That being said - don’t call it a sport just because it’s something boys like to do.

Girls “compete” in shopping, either by having the most designer thing, or finding the best bargain. Obviously, this takes lots of practice, money, and skill? Shopping is a physical activity that makes me want to take breaks often. My heart rate is often raised past it’s target heart rate when I look at how much damn money all the stuff costs. Physical coordination is definitely necessary when “shopping until you drop” because the person with the best coordination and endurance will fall last. You cannot smoke a cigarette while shopping continuously because cigarettes are not permitted in most shopping areas. Is shopping a sport? If it isn’t because it isn’t regulated by a specific entity other than other girls, if it was regulated by an entity, would it be a sport?

-I just mentioned things that would specifically designate something as *not* being a sport.
-Backyard football does not require some association membership to be a sport, and it definitely is.
-You can shop online. I’ll add one now that Eric suggested earlier: if you can complete the entirety of the activity successfully through the use of a computer, it is not a sport.
-”Having the most designer thing”…you’re too cute, Sean. :-p

I agree. Golf requires physical coordination and takes place outside.

ok cool. here is my criteria for what makes a sport:

      1. must be physical in nature. thus, board and card games are out.
      2. must have a measurable way to determine a winner. no judges deciding outcomes. gymnastics is not a sport. ice skating is not a sport. (exception is fighting because the goal is to win without the judges deciding)
      3. you cannot play it in a bar. no billiards, no darts, no shuffleboard or foosball or golden tee.

I think gymnastics & ice skating are sports. Both require coordination, and physical activity.. duh!
